The Engineeringity

Tata the industrial conglomerate that predominates at the heart of India's resolution in the Global Business stage. For nearly two eras the TATA Group has built multiple industries in India and remains a market leader in most of them. You probably must have heard about the Tata Motors car division but you will soon discover that their reach extends notably exceeding that one subsidiary.

Jamsetji Tata | Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata (J.R.D Tata) | Ratan Naval Tata

We'll see how 3 generations of TATA businessmen have established one of India's most successful companies.

History before the beginning of Tata

The tale of Tata starts during the reign of the British Empire. India was a huge exporter of cotton back then, but the brutal regimen of the British East India Company left little room for local entrepreneurs to develop.

The poor treatment by the British eventually resulted in a revolt against them in 1857 which ended the power of the British East India Company and replaced it with the British Raj. Now compared to its ruthless predecessor the Raj was much more focused on keeping the peace. The Raj didn't exploit the Indian population quite as harshly and it also invested a lot of money for example in building India's first Railway.

Jamsetji Tata Era

Of course, at the end of the day, the British Raj was still an oppressive colonial power but at least it finally gave the local population the economic opportunity to develop themselves. Because India was an exporting land the first Indian entrepreneurs came from exactly that sector and one of them was Jamsetji Tata. He was the son of an exporter in Bombay(Mumbai) and he graduated in 1858 it was the precise opportunity to take benefit of the economic reformations of the British Raj.

What did Jamsetji Tata do | Founder of Tata group | Jamsetji Tata son

Because his father's export business was developing in 1859 Jamsetji Tata went to Hong Kong to develop a subsidiary there and upon seeing the share scale of British trade there, he realizes that the Tata export business must truly have Global potential. Over the next decade, he could visit Japan, China, and Great Britain building a network of distribution for his father's business.

Who Started Tata Industries?

Jamsetji Tata ultimately formed his own exporting business in 1858 and using the money he started manufacturing textile mills (Empress Mills in Nagpur in 1874) of his own effectively conceiving a vertically combined business.

When did Jamsetji Tata Start?

From the very start, Jamsetji Tata's perspective was to find the best practices used across the world and bring them to India. In his textile mills, he introduced policies that were practically unknown to most of India like granting sickness perks and pensions to his employees. But Jamsetji wasn't satisfied with just the textile industries, he witnessed wonders in Industrial Revolution that had been created in Europe and he aspired to recreate them back home.

He commenced working on the Steel production plant in 1901, modeled after the one seen in Germany(Krupp Steel). Even more ambitious was his Hydroelectric plant motivated by his visit to the Niagara Falls power plant in 1903(Edward Dean Adams Power Plant).

Tata's Identified Power of Tourism

Jamsetji realized the incredible power of tourism and so he also created a chain of hotels starting with the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel which even today is one of the most recognizable buildings in Mumbai.

Jamsetji Tata was truly a man devoted to business and also helped people through it he valued education to a certain point he donated lands and buildings towards the making of the Indian Institute of Science, the renowned University of India.

Who Owns Tata Group?

However, Jamsetji Tata didn't live to see most of his project complete because he died on a business trip in Germany in 1904, leaving the already sizable Tata Company to his two sons.

Sir Dorabji Tata Trust in 1932.

Sir Ratanji Tata Trust in 1918.

Together they solidified their ownership into a single holding company which in turn is owned by the Charitable Trust they planned for future generations. They had a great vision of the Future.

Future generations of Tatas

Jamsetji Tata's sons fulfilled many of his ambitions they oversaw the creation of India's first Steelworks in 1907, India's first cement plant in 1912, and the first indigenous insurance company in 1919. By the time the leadership mantle passed onto the next generation in 1938 Tata Sons was comprised of 14 different companies. Wherein that Power was established in 1910 and Tat Oil Mills in 1917.

This time however instead of going to one of Jamsetji's grandsons, leadership rather went into the hands of a distant cousin with a profoundly interesting background.

Jehangir Tata Era (J.R.D Tata)

Jehangir Ratanji Tata better known as J.R.D Tata has been in the company since 1925 but he had been raised in France and was a dear friend(Louis Bleriot) to the gentleman who made the first flight across the English Channel (The flight happened in 1909).

Contributions of JRD Tata | Founder of Tata Airline | Air India

In other words, J.R.D Tata was a passionate Aviator, and in 1929 he obtained India's first pilot license so unsurprisingly his first big project at Tata was to develop an Airline.

How did Tata Airlines begin?

J.R.D Tata was the founder of Tata Airlines. In 1932 Jehangir Tata (J.R.D) developed the Tata Air Service which first only transported mail but then in 1938 started arranging passenger flights as well even helping out the British in the II World War. Now you would think that India's independence in 1947 has been beneficial to Tata. But in actuality, the socialist policies formed by the latest government were in favor of individual companies.

India's first Prime Minister (Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru) noticed just how successful JRD has been with his airline and in 1953 unilaterally PM decided to Nationalize. He kept JRD as Airlines’s chairman until 1977 and you can visualize how the company only went downhill from there, sinking into ever-increasing debts.

How did Tata motors Start?

Of course, JRD would not allow politics to get in the way of their Profession and so he did his best to grow Tata while evading the rage of the socialist. JRD created Tata Motors in 1945 originally with the idea of building locomotives but in 1954 he diverged out into commercial vehicles through a partnership with the German car automaker Daimler.

Over 52 years of leadership JRD grew the TATA Group from 14 companies to 95 companies but to do that he had dramatically reduced the ownership of Tata Sons owned in each one to satisfy the socialist.

In 1969 the Indian government introduced the "Monopolies and Limiting Trade Practices" Act that intimated essentially targeted Tata even though they were very far from a monopoly by Western standards. But as JRD extended the group and reduced its ownership in the individual subsidiaries he started losing control of Tata.

Sir Ratan Tata Era

Some of his companies weren't performing well and the gentleman who was sent to fix them was none other than Ratan Tata. He is one of Jamsetji's great-grandchildren and he entered the TATA Group in 1962. His first major project came in 1971 and it was pretty much challenging.

Sir Ratan Tata | Contribution of Ratan Tata | Air India Back to Tata

Ratan Tata was given charge of one struggling TATA company known as Nelco(National radio and electronics company) which in 1950 was India's biggest producer of radios but just 20 years later it had fallen to 3% market share. Ratan's focus was on technology and the future so instead of trying to retrieve the radio instead funded the development of new products like satellite communication which reclaimed NELCO in 1980 and made Ratan the clear successor of J.R.D Tata.

Foreign companies were allowed to invest in India

Ratan Tata claimed leadership of Tata Group in 1991, right as a waiver of economic liberalization swept across India. The socialists lost power and India finally joined the Global capital market but this presented a big threat to Tata. Up until now, it had operated in a very protected economy that was suddenly opened to competition from foreign companies. Worse yet, if JRD had let Tata become extremely decentralized it would be very slow to adapt to a new competitor.

Getting back the ownership of Tata subsidiaries

Ratan Tata had no choice but to re-establish ownership over all the TATA subsidiaries and that didn't come cheap at all. He sold 20% of TATA Sons the holding company and used that money to buy shares in the Tata subsidiaries especially Tata Steel and Tata Motors.

He then arranged all the hundred subsidiaries in 7 sectors establishing a framework along with which he could actually control them. But just building power isn't enough to turn around a struggling business and in 1990 pretty much every TATA company was losing ground to international competitors. Sir Ratan Tata's answer however was brilliant he started acquiring foreign competition and occupying them into the TATA Group effectively buying all their talent and supply chains and experience to grow his business back home in India while also growing globally.

Ratan Tata's purchasing frolic begin in the year 2000 when his beverage company Tata Tea acquired the Tetley company from Great Britain. Over the next decade, Ratan ended up acquiring hundreds of companies for pretty much every subsidiary in the TATA Group. Most notably he purchased the European Steel Titan Corus for $12 billion in 2007 and then Jaguar Land Rover for $2 billion in 2008.

As you can just figure out the international buying spree has been paying profits for Tata and today the majority of their revenues actually come from outside of India. What's even more impressive is that the majority of Tata subsidiaries are actually public companies whose shares can be purchased on the stock market in India.

Obtaining Air India Back to Tata

Sir Ratan Tata welcomed  Air India back in Tata on 6th October 2021 from Government. Due to Intensive losses at Air India Airline, it was bided by Government and Tata won the bid and bought it. Tata Airlines which was once given to the Government by JRD Tata was obtained this year in 2021 after the decision of the CEO of Tata Group Natarajan Chandrasekaran. Today Tata has 3 Airlines under its management Air Asia, Vistara, and Air India.

Every year we celebrate many festivals. But sometimes we do not know the stories and reasons behind it. Why these festivals are celebrated. This is the season of Holi so we will see why we celebrate it the reason behind and what must learn.

What is the story behind Holi why do we celebrate it?

This Festival got its name from 'Holika'. Hiranya Kashyap use to be king of demons and after long prolonged austerity(meditation) he was blessed with power by Lord Bhrama which was no one can kill him either at night or during the day, nor at home or outside, without any weapons. He became powerful as he uses to misuse his powers and tell others to worship him as he was booned by gods.

Then after a long time, he was blessed with a son named 'Prahlad'. Prahlad uses to worship Lord Vishnu and he had a huge belief in Vishnu. When others use to worship Hiranya Kashyap his own son use to worship Lord Vishnu, he got angry.

Hiranya also threatened his son to worship him. But his son refused it. He also executed many plans to kill his son but none worked, even Prahlad was placed in between the poisonous snakes but none affected him he still worshiped God Vishnu.

Festival of Holi Named Holika Mohostav
Holika sitting along with Prahlad on burning pyres

At last, his father Hirnaya thought of one more plan to kill his son Prahlad, he approached his demoness daughter named Holika and told her that you are going to sit on fire with her younger brother Prahlad, Holika sat on fire covering herself with a blanket so that Prahlad get burnt. But Prahlad had the blessings of Lord Vishnu.

But Look at the beauty of Nature, the blanket came on Prahlad, and Holika got burnt to ashes and Prahlad was safe.

After that Lord Vishnu came in the evening between day and night and killed Hiranya Kashyap and ended the story.

This is the reason every year on this day people burn large pyres to symbolize the burning of the demoness Holika then after this Festival got its name  'Holika' and one more question arises.

Why do we play with colors on Holi?

The question you must be thinking that why do we play with colors on Holi and who started it.

Colors | festival Holi | Shri Krishna

It all started when Shri Krishna started playing Holi with colors in Vrindavan with his friends. Colors had significant importance because at that time colors were made using flowers and that is the reason they were skin-friendly.

But for a few decades, these colors are made using chemicals that harm our skin.

Thus, after the Holika bonfire, Holi is celebrated with colors.

    Things to be learned

Many things can be learned from this festival of Holi but here are some of the qualities of things we must learn,

    • Killing the negativity within us and spreading positivity.

    • Do not only work hard but also see why are you working so hard.
    • Even if the ego does get par utilizes it rather than misutilizing it.

    • Misutitizing the power is always better than not having the power.

    • Detach before the truth gets converted into lies.

The great thing about Holi is that you don't have to be Hindu. There are Holi festivals right around the world like in Australia and mainly in India. and lots of people get involved.

    Happy Holi !

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was a visionary leader and founder of the Maratha Empire in western India during the 17th century. He was born in 1627 in the Shivneri Fort in Pune, Maharashtra, India, and went on to become one of the most revered and respected figures in Indian history.

What is the first thing when we think about 'Marathas' Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Guerilla warfare or the war fought against the Mughals? But we often forget that in medieval India there was only one kingdom that had its own navy.

Based on this Navy Marathas didn't just maintain their dominion on the entire Konkan coast but also suppressed all other naval powers including the Portuguese, the Dutch, and the Britishers.

    Maratha Navy

One of his most significant achievements was the establishment of a navy, which helped him gain control of the Arabian Sea and maintain communication with various coastal regions. He also built a network of forts, which served as the backbone of his empire's defense and allowed his army to move swiftly throughout the region.

So how did the Maratha navy come into existence and how did they maintain their domination on the coast of Konkan for nearly 100 years?

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj | Great leader
    Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

The Maratha navy was a powerful naval force established by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire in western India. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj recognized the importance of controlling the sea, especially for the coastal regions of his empire, and therefore, he made significant efforts to establish a navy.

So the story begins in the medical period when the Navy was called Armor in Marathi. To establish the navy, we had the raw material for the workers but the workers didn't know the technique to build a naval ship. So Shivaji Maharaj asked who knew this technique. So he asked a Portuguese by the name of Vegas to send his men and pay them handsome money to start shipbuilding.

But Maharaj told Abaji Sondev that every man he would assign to the job should be very sharp. (Just imagine their ingenuity). Maharaj said this because he knew that the goa headquarters of the Portuguese would find out that the Marathas were building a Naval ship, and they would definitely interfere. Two months later Viegas suddenly quit his job and left. Maharaj asked Sondev if he had done as instructed. Did you assign smart men? Abaji Sondev said not to worry Maharaj we've learned everything. And they started a factory.

While building ships Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj also made sure that the designs of their ships were slightly different from European ships. European ships were in deep waters, so the portion was quite profound. But Maharaj knew that the ships would remain near the coastal areas which were not so deep. So he built his ships smaller and flat bottoms so they could stay closer to the coasts.

By doing this Shivaji Maharaji's Navy oppugned the Britishers and the Portuguese and European Navy. Shivaji Maharaj gave Marathas a grand navy and turned it into a profitable enterprise and well-organized. The Maratha navy also played a significant role in protecting the Maratha Empire from attacks by other neighboring kingdoms, such as the Siddis of Janjira. Overall, the Maratha navy was a significant achievement of Shivaji's reign, and it served as a model for naval warfare in India for centuries to come. This is the reason why he is called the Father of the Indian Navy.

Diwali is an important religious festival originating in India. Many stories are associated with Diwali like Lord Rama returning to Ayodhya, Goddess Durga killing Demon Mahishasura, and Pandavas returning home to Hastinapura. But few people must be knowing about Lord Krishna's victory over Demon Narakaasura.

Narakaasura was born to Varaha an avatar of Vishnu and goddess earth as he was born with the qualities of demon Goddess Earth feared, that he might be killed by Vishnu in the future so she pleaded with Vishnu not to kill Narakaasura at any cost, Vishnu thought for a while and Narakaasura was booned that except his mother no one can kill him. Goddess Earth was happy after hearing the decision and was confident that she would never kill her son(Narakaasura) at any cost.

As the days passed by Narakaasura grew more powerful than before even Indra could not defeat Narakaasura, so the only way was going to Lord Vishnu to protect people from Narakaasura, Lord Vishnu assures them that the end is near for Narakasura soon Lord Vishnu took the avatar of Lord Krishna and Goddess earth was born as Satyabhama, meanwhile, Narakaasura continued his evilness. He tormented(mentally suffering) the Rishis and challenged the kings.

On one such day, he had to face Shri Krishna. Shri Krishna knew that the end of Narakaasura was in the hands of Goddess earth so he did not stop Satyabhama when she wished to watch the battle between Shri Krishna and Narakaasura. The battle between them(Shri Krishna and Narakaasura) started, they both fought fiercely after a while Narakaasura was able to make Shri Krishna unconscious with one of his weapons. Then Satyabham herself fought with Narakaasura. She courageously faced him and aimed arrows at him.

Valmiki was the first poet who authored the epic Ramayana which contains 24000 shlokas and 7 cantos including Uttara Kanda. He lived in Treta Yuga. He was also considered 'Adi Kavi' which means the first poet of the Sanskrit language. The sage who composed Ramayan, under the inspiration of Lord Brahma and Brahmarshi Narad. Guru of Lava and Kusha (son of Lord Rama).

      Valmiki Sage | ratnakar valmiki
      Maharshi Valmiki

Ever thought about who was Valmiki before turning to Rishi?

A man called Ratnakar used to steal and serve his family. He took part in many terrible loots from his nearby village. Once Narad Muni passed by the forest, Ratnakar stopped him and tried to rob him. Narad Muni asked Ratnakar, Why do you do this job? to which Ratnakar replied that to raise his family.

Naradji says are your wife, son, and parents with you in this sin? upon this Ratnakar says "yes why not they are with me". Naradji says let's make your family members judge and ask them whether they share those sins.

Ratnakar went home asking his wife, son, and parents whether they will be part of his sin ?. On this his wife uttered words, "I will be part of your joy and sorrows, not your sins". He was shocked to hear her answer. Afterward, he returned to Narad Muni who said if your parents and wife do not want to be part of your sin, then why are committing this sin for them?

Ratnakar felt alone, he grabbed Narad Muni's feet. Naradji guided him to the knowledge of the truth.

Naradji taught him to chant Ram-Nam. However Ratnakar was unable to pronounce Rama's name, therefore Narad Muni instructed him to chant "Mara-Mara", and soon he recited Lord Rama's name. Years passed but Ratnakar was still meditating and reciting Ram-Nam. Anthill was created upon Ratnakar.

One day Naradji was passing by the way and cleared the anthill (a nest in the form of a mound built by ants). With a smile on his face, Naradji declared Ratnakar a sage, from now you will be called Valmiki (reborn from anthill). With tears of happiness, the sage Valmiki started his new life near the Ganga river.

The dacoit in this story gave up his existing world and created his own new world again which we call Ramayana. History says that Ratnakar, the dacoit of the past later on became Valmiki, the creator of the saga of Ramayana.

This was the story of how Ratnakar, became Sage Valmiki from a Dacoit (hunter).

Valmiki had a great power of thinking. He had a different perception to look towards the world. Sage Valmiki stressed positive thinking. For him, service and human dignity are at the top.

Valmiki's words are rays of hope for millions of poor Dalits, they instill a sense of hope and belief in them.

According to him if a person has willpower then he can accomplish any task easily. It is willpower that gives the strength to many youths to accomplish extraordinary tasks.

Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated on a full moon night or Purnima of Ashvin month.

We will be always grateful to sage Valmiki for writing such a great scripture like Ramayana, which will be a guide for the younger ones.

At last from his teachings, we can conclude that,

Man is the master of infinite possibilities if he could know himself!

Chanting reversely Rama's name dacoit Ratnakar turned into Valmiki Maharshi who wrote the epic "Ramayana".

      Happy Valmiki Jayanti

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi had a significant amount of contribution to the world of Indian history. Becoming a Barrister from England and arriving in India, Gandhi had a great life, but it all started with his removal from the train by the Britishers, from that day Gandhi was not just a name and the Rest is history.

mahatma Gandhi was told to leave train

This year India may celebrate the 151st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on 2nd October 1869 in Porbander, Gujrat. When Gandhi was growing up, few people had predicted that one day he would attract millions of followers.

In fact, Gandhi was ordinary and extremely shy when he was young. He even described running home from school so he wouldn't have to talk to anybody. He became 'Father of Nation' and was fondly addressed as Bappu. He used to read various books, Grants, and many other Hindu novels. While he had written many books based on his experience, which still shows us the new way of life through his experience, his thoughts are meaningful even today.

7 lessons we should learn from Mahatma Gandhi.

      1. Innovation  (in the war people used weapons but he was the only one with non-violence and peace).
      2. Brander  (even today people can identify by glasses, stick, and charkha) we should focus on our branding.
      3.  Mastermind (he used to convince people through his skills, and ideas many people).
      4.  The mind is stronger than the body ( Gandhi was frail, but his mind was mightier).
      5.  Motivation (Belief in doing more than speaking.)
      6.  Healthy Mind & Body (he experimented with food to find out how eating in small quantities would give him enough energy)
      7. Anger & Negativity (Both anger and intolerance are the most significant negative forces and they can destroy a person )
The charkha later became a symbol of autonomy and unity.

Freedom is never dear at any price. It is the breath of life. What would a man not pay for living?

                           - Mahatma Gandhi

Forgiveness is a trait of strong, not weak

      Happy Gandhi Jayanti
